“The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands.”

The 2009-2010 theme for Rotary International is, “The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands.” John Kenny, RI President, stresses that Rotary’s future depends on each and every Rotary club. “Each of us,” he says, “is standing on the shoulders of generations of Rotarians past, and it is our responsibility to determine Rotary’s future.”

This year again, a primary focus will be raising a minimum of $1,000 from our club to complete immunizations against polio in the remaining four countries that are endemic—Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Nigeria.” Polio cases have dropped by 99.8% since 1985, when Rotary began the task of obliterating this devastating disease. Thanks to a $355 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates, and Rotary’s commitment to raise $200 million, the dream of a polio free world is achievable, and the anguish of a disease that once crippled 1,000 people a day will soon be a thing of the past.

Rotary’s mission, vision and values all have their core in our motto, “Service Above Self.” Let’s put our Rotary hands to work. Local opportunities to serve are plentiful, with projects such as the Doughmobile, Showmobile, Flight Breakfast, Best of Algona, etc., all providing funds so that we can assist in many local projects, and do much good in service to our community and beyond. Another way hands can be put to work, is by reaching into purses and wallets to support the Rotary Foundation in global projects, improving the quality of life for people around the world.

I am humbled and honored to serve as this year’s Rotary President. We have a strong membership comprised of people with good hearts, who are not afraid to use their hands to ensure that the work of Rotary will continue to be a blessing. The future of Rotary is in our hands. Let’s make it work!
